Temptation - Preliminary Drawing

For my  senior portfolio class we had a painted final. I had everyone choose some sort of portrait  and I gave them all three pieces of reference from which to choose two. I gave a sheet of various snakes, some random mechanical parts and had them choose an element (fire, wind, water, etc.).  I decided to paint along with them and I will show more of that later. Here is the preliminary drawing I did for it. I have wanted to paint this subject for years and never have gotten around to it. I think Eve often times gets a bum rap for being the one that succumbed to temptation, but I believe it was really a conscious choice that she did not take lightly. The painting itself is a bit of an experiment and I have some process shots I will show as well.

  1. I love this! The subject matter, the treatment of it, and the feeling that this piece, even in its early stages evokes.

  2. Thanks Sarah- I'll post progress for this as soon as I get out from under some deadlines.

  3. Really like this, Greg. A slightly different look from your current work, which I love as well. Will look forward to following your progress on Miss Eve who I agree, gets much scorn for her decision. I've always felt it was Eve's deep and innate need to nurture and create that convinced her to partake and move forward out of the Garden.

  4. Thanks Kim, The drawing and design feel comfortable, the subject a bit different than normal, enough to feel challenging. It's the painting that, so far, is out of my comfort zone as I try some different things. I am withholding showing progress here until I feel like I have pulled it out of the weeds. One of my Facebook buddies said "I'd take fruit from her", so I take that as a compliment.

  5. That was a recurrent theme on my earliest works - Adam & Eve, I mean. Every since high school, I think I've used it as a subject for engraving, acrylic painting, ceramics and life drawing.
Which means I'm really looking forward for your final version!

  6. Thanks Jack, this will be a fun experiment. Depending on how it turns out, I might do a larger version in oil as well. So many paintings, so little time...

  7. I will be very interested in seeing where/how this goes. I wish someone would give me an assignment like this. I often wander into the art room at the high school where I teach, and wish I was working with the students. This assignment sounds great!
